CSC rodeo begins Friday

Published:

More than 500 entries are expected for the annual Chadron State College rodeo this weekend at the Dawes County Fairgrounds in Chadron. The rodeo will be the first of 10 in the Central Rocky Mountain Region this school year.

Four performances are slated. They will be Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m., when the finals will take place. Slack for several of the timed events will be at 1 p.m. Friday.

Rodeo at Chadron State dates back to 1955.

The Chadron State rodeo coach, Dustin Luper, said this year’s team includes 12 women and 19 men.  Nine of the women and six of the men were on last year’s team. The addition of five saddle bronc riders will make CSC competitive in that event for the first time in several years.

The rough stock will be furnished by Burch Rodeo Co. of Gillette, Wyo. The timed events cattle will be supplied by the Jim Johnston family at Thedford.

Dale Christensen of Kadoka, S.D., will be the announcer. William Davey of Rapid City and Cody Brooks of Chadron will be the bullfighters.

Wade Voss of New Underwood, S.D., and Paul Cleveland of Arthur will be the judges.

Luper will speak during cowboy church at 8 a.m. Sunday in the grandstand at the fairgrounds. It will be open to the public without charge.

Tickets for the rodeo will be $5 per person per session. There is no charge for those 12 and under or for Chadron State personnel who have an ID card.

The other fall rodeos are Sept. 18-20 at Central Wyoming College at Riverton, Sept. 25-27 at Sheridan, Wyo., College, Oct. 2-4 at Lamar, Colo., College and Oct. 16-18 at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne.
