U.S. News & World Report has again placed Chadron State College on its list of best baccalaureate colleges in the Midwest.

For the second consecutive year, CSC was the only public institution in Nebraska to be named among the nationally circulated publication's top 69 baccalaureate institutions in the Midwest region, an area that encompasses 12 states.

“Chadron State College is a Midwest treasure recognized nationally for its academic quality and value,” said CSC President Janie Park. “We are very pleased to once again be acknowledged by U.S. News as one of the best colleges in the Midwest.”

The publication described baccalaureate colleges as those focusing on undergraduate education and offering a range of degree programs in the liberal arts -- which account for fewer than half of their bachelor's degrees -- and in professional fields such as business, nursing and education.

CSC offers undergraduate programs in about 70 majors or endorsements, numerous professional studies options and four master’s degrees.

During the past 26 years, the U.S. News college rankings, which groups schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, has been a research tool for students and parents considering higher education opportunities.

The 2010 America’s Best Colleges package provides an examination of how more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools compared on a set of 15 indicators of excellence. Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate performance.

Highlights of the college rankings will be published in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges issue, available for newsstand purchase. The rankings also are accessible online at www.usnews.com.
